The Popularity of Cats as Pets in Indonesia

In Indonesia, cats are one of the most beloved pets, capturing the hearts of many households across the country. According to our recent survey, a significant portion of Indonesians (53%) prefer male cats as their “fur babies.” This trend reflects the growing affection for these furry companions and sheds light on the most popular breeds, ages, and cat food brands favoured by Indonesian cat owners.

Most Popular Cat Breeds in Indonesia

When it comes to choosing a cat breed, Indonesians have shown a strong preference for certain types. The Domestic Shorthair, known locally as “Kucing Kampung,” tops the list with a notable 49% of the respondents favoring this breed. The Domestic Shorthair is appreciated for its adaptability and robust health, making it a practical choice for many.

Coming in second is the Persian cat, favored by 25% of the respondents. Persian cats are cherished for their luxurious fur and calm temperament, adding a touch of elegance to any home. Other popular breeds include the British Shorthair and Bengal, chosen by 4% and 3% of the respondents, respectively. These breeds are appreciated for their distinct appearances and personalities, although they are less common in Indonesian households.

Preferred Ages for Cats

The survey also highlights the age groups of cats that Indonesians prefer as pets. Young cats are particularly favoured, with 33% of respondents preferring cats aged 6-12 months. This preference might be due to the playful nature and adaptability of young cats, making them perfect companions as they grow and learn with their owners.

Other popular age groups include 2-3 years old (Young Adult) at 20%, and 13-18 months old at 15%. Interestingly, the preference drops significantly for older cats, with only 1% of respondents favouring cats over 16 years old. This trend suggests a general preference for younger, more energetic cats that can engage actively with their owners.

Popular Cat Food Brands in Indonesia

When it comes to feeding their feline friends, Indonesians have shown a strong preference for specific cat food brands. The top five most popular cat food brands are Whiskas (59%), Me-O (37%), Royal Canin (30%), Bolt (27%), and Cat Choize (27%). These brands are well-known for their quality and nutritional value, ensuring that cats receive a balanced diet.

Interestingly, Whiskas also tops the list as the most frequently purchased cat food brand, with 28% of respondents regularly buying it. Cat Choize and Bolt follow at 12% and 11%, respectively. This purchasing pattern reflects the trust and familiarity Indonesian cat owners have with these brands, ensuring that their beloved pets are well-fed with high-quality food.

It’s clear that cats hold a special place in the hearts of many Indonesians, providing comfort, companionship, and joy to countless households across the nation. As the pet industry continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how these trends evolve and whether new breeds, ages, or cat food brands gain popularity among Indonesian cat lovers.
