Tea or Coffee? Part 1

Coffee and tea are among the most popular beverages in Indonesia. The Indonesia coffee market generated a revenue of USD 16,839.4 million in 2023 and is expected to reach USD 25,911.1 million by 2030 [1], meanwhile the tea market in Indonesia is now gaining popularity, especially after many new modern tea products and shops/outlets are appearing. It is even projected to grow by 5.41% (2025-2029) resulting in a market volume of US$3.37bn in 2029 [2].

However, which one do Indonesians truly favor? Check out our findings below.

According to the infographic above, we found out that:

  • 45% of Indonesians prefer coffee, with men showing a stronger preference at 58% compared to 40% of women.
  • 44% favor tea, with women at 48% leaning towards it more than men at 36%.
  • 10% of respondents dislike both beverages.
  • Young adults (18-25 years old) and middle-aged adults (26-34 years old) lean more towards coffee.
  • Older individuals (41+ years) show an equal preference for tea and coffee.

Many Indonesians incorporate tea or coffee into their daily routine. About 33% consume it every day, while 29% drink it two to three times a week. Only 3% have it once a month, and 4% drink it rarely. Additionally, among those who drink these beverages daily, 58% consume it once a day, 29% drink it twice a day, 8% have it three times daily, and 5% drink it more than three times a day as a substitute for water.

Furthermore, Helena, Sales Manager of Snapcart in Jakarta (12/2) said, “Indonesians are evenly split between coffee and tea, with coffee slightly leading in preference. Productivity drive coffee consumption, while health benefits attract tea lovers.”

Our data shows that for those who prefer coffee, the majority of them (51%) said it helps eliminate drowsiness and boosts productivity. On the other hand, many of tea lovers (29%) believe that tea is healthier than coffee.

Indonesians’ Favourite Coffee and Tea Drinks

This survey also discovered that Indonesians has their own favorite coffee and tea drinks. The top choices for coffee include cappuccino at 35%, latte at 22%, americano at 14%, and white coffee at 10%.

Nevertheless, when it comes to tea, the most favored drinks are regular sweet tea at 37%, brewed tea at 13%, regular plain tea at 12%, and Thai tea at 11%. Additionally, for those who love sweet and plain tea, jasmine tea is the most preferred at 33%, followed by black tea at 23%, and green tea at 22%.
