Ramadan is a significant time for Muslims worldwide, and in Indonesia, iftar gatherings hold a special place in the hearts of many. According to our recent survey that was conducted in March 2025, we discovered that 75% of Indonesians plan to attend or have already participated in iftar gatherings.
However, how do Indonesians really think and feel about attending this event? Do they actually believe that iftar gatherings are important?
Check out our findings in this article.

Our study reveals that most Indonesians actively engage in iftar gatherings, with varying levels of participation. This year, 53% of Indonesians attend at least one gathering, 21% attend two gatherings, 12% attend three gatherings, 5% attend four gatherings, and 9% attend more than four gatherings. These numbers highlight the strong cultural significance of iftar gatherings, with many Indonesians prioritizing these social events during Ramadan.
Nevertheless, Boy Irvan, Associate Account Director of Snapcart in Jakarta (13/3) stated, “This research indicates that Indonesians attend iftar gatherings for different motivations. 49% attend out of their own desire, 26% feel obligated due to social expectations, and 25% attend for both reasons. This shows that while many genuinely enjoy these gatherings, some feel pressured to attend due to social expectations.”
The Ideal Iftar Gathering
When it comes to company, we figured out that Indonesians prefer to have iftar gatherings with their big family (46%), closest friends (29%), romantic partners (9%), coworkers (7%), school or college friends (6%), and colleagues from certain organizations (3%). Family remains the most popular choice, reinforcing the cultural emphasis on togetherness and unity during Ramadan.
Moreover, when selecting a location for an iftar gathering, Indonesians prioritize the following factors:
- Strategic Location (27%) – Venues should be easily accessible from home, work, or school.
- Comfortable Atmosphere (23%) – A relaxing and inviting space is preferred.
- Facilities (18%) – Essential amenities like prayer rooms, toilets, and parking spaces enhance the experience.
- Delicious Food (15%) – A good selection of food adds to the enjoyment.
- Affordable Pricing (14%) – Cost plays a role in determining whether people will attend or host a gathering.
The Importance of Iftar Gatherings for Indonesians
According to this research, 57% of Indonesians believe iftar gatherings are essential during Ramadan. The top three reasons include:
- Strengthening Fellowship (56%) – Many Indonesians see these gatherings as an opportunity to reconnect with family, friends, and loved ones.
- Relieving Longing for Loved Ones (18%) – Iftar gatherings allow people to reunite with those they haven’t seen in a while.
- A Stress Reliever (13%) – Breaking fast together provides a refreshing break from daily routines and responsibilities.
On the other hand, 43% of Indonesians feel that iftar gatherings are not essential. The top reasons are:
- More Important Priorities (36%) – Some people believe they have more pressing tasks than attending social gatherings.
- Showcasing Achievements (20%) – A portion of respondents feel that some iftar events focus too much on status and achievements rather than genuine connection.
- Cost Concerns (17%) – Some Indonesians avoid gatherings due to the financial burden associated with hosting or attending these events.
