Celebrating Eid al Fitr 2025 in Indonesia

Eid al Fitr is one of the most significant celebrations in Indonesia. In our recent survey, we discovered that in 2025, 86% of Indonesians are planning to celebrate it, and 84% of Indonesians have allocated a budget for it, emphasizing its importance in their lives.

However, some news reports stated that Indonesians are more cautious in spending their money for this year’s Eid. Is that true?

Check out our findings below.

Compared to the last three years, many Indonesians have adjusted their budgets for Eid al Fitr 2025. A considerable 43% have increased their budgets, indicating a stronger financial commitment to the celebration. Meanwhile, 30% of respondents have reduced their spending, possibly due to financial constraints or a more frugal approach. The remaining 27% have chosen to maintain a budget similar to past years.

However, despite an increase in spending for some, 88% of respondents emphasize that they still practice budget efficiency to ensure they make the most out of the celebration without excessive spending.

Moreover, our data also revealed that Indonesians have different spending capacities when it comes to celebrating Eid. A quarter of respondents, around 25%, have allocated less than IDR 500,000 for the festivities. The largest segment, comprising 33%, has set aside a budget ranging between IDR 500,000 and IDR 1,000,000. Around 26% of respondents plan to spend between IDR 1,000,000 and IDR 3,000,000, while 10% have budgeted between IDR 3,000,000 and IDR 5,000,000. A smaller portion, 6%, will be spending over IDR 5,000,000, indicating a more extravagant celebration.

When it comes to Eid al Fitr spending, Indonesians focus on three primary categories. The largest share of expenses, at 30%, is dedicated to fashion products, as many people purchase new clothes for the holiday. The second biggest expenditure is on THR (Tunjangan Hari Raya) gifts and parcels, accounting for 28%, reflecting the strong cultural tradition of giving during Eid. Finally, 21% of spending goes toward food and beverages, including ingredients and prepared meals, as families gather to enjoy traditional feasts together.

Homecoming (Mudik) Tradition

“Mudik, or the homecoming tradition, remains a crucial part of Eid celebrations in Indonesia. Even though the majority of Indonesians are practicing budget efficiency, this year, more than a half of population (54%) in Indonesia are planning to return to their hometowns to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which represents that being together with family is one of the most important things to do during Eid for Indonesians,” said Haifa, Business Development & Corporate Marketing Associate of Snapcart, in Jakarta (27/3).

Furthermore, our research also found out that East Java is the most popular destination, with 18% of travelers heading there. Central Java follows closely at 15%, while 13% of respondents are traveling to Jabodetabek. West Java is also a preferred homecoming location, with 12% of travelers choosing to visit family there. These numbers highlight the cultural significance of gathering with loved ones during the holiday.

With millions of Indonesians traveling for Eid, various transportation options come into play. The most popular mode of transportation is private cars, with 32% of respondents opting for this option to allow for flexibility and convenience. Private motorcycles are also widely used, with 26% choosing this mode, particularly for shorter-distance travel. Public transportation remains essential, with 15% traveling by bus, 10% using travel shuttles, and 8% opting for trains. Air travel accounts for 6% of trips, while 3% will use ships to reach their destinations.

The timing of homecoming trips varies among Indonesians. Around 18% prefer to travel one week before Eid, allowing them ample time to prepare for the celebrations. Another 16% opt to travel within one to two days before Eid, making it one of the busiest periods for transportation. A smaller portion, 13%, leaves three to five days before the holiday. Meanwhile, 11% prefer to leave two weeks ahead of time, while another 11% travel on the exact day of Eid. Lastly, 10% choose to make their journey one to three days after Eid.
