Dogs: The Most Popular Pets in the World and a Favourite in Indonesia

According to some studies, dogs have earned the title of the most popular pets worldwide. In Indonesia, this trend is no different, with a fascinating preference among dog owners that sheds light on their beloved choices.

Male dogs reign supreme in Indonesia. When it comes to choosing a furry companion, Indonesians show a marked preference for male dogs. Our survey revealed that an impressive 66% of dog owners in Indonesia have adopted male dogs as their pets. This statistic underscores the popularity of male dogs, which may be due to various cultural, behavioral, or even aesthetic reasons.

On the other side, among the multitude of dog breeds available, some stand out as the top choices for Indonesian pet owners. The Poodle takes the lead, accounting for 10% of the favorite breeds. This is followed closely by the Chihuahua, which makes up 9%, and the Akita at 8%. Each of these breeds brings unique qualities to the table, whether it be the Poodle’s intelligence and hypoallergenic coat, the Chihuahua’s compact size and big personality, or the Akita’s loyalty and strength.

Meanwhile when it comes to choosing a dog based on age, adult dogs are the preferred companions for many Indonesians. The survey data reveals that dogs aged 1-3 years are the most popular, with 49% of owners favoring this age group. This preference may be due to the balance these dogs offer in terms of energy, trainability, and companionship. Younger dogs (under 1 year old) come next at 15%, while older dogs aged 4-6 years account for 21%. Interestingly, the preference significantly drops for dogs older than 7 years, with only 15% have senior dogs as their pets.
