The Healing Phenomenon Among Gen Z in Indonesia

In recent years, Generation Z in Indonesia has embraced the healing trend, prioritizing mental and emotional well-being, which has shaped young Indonesians’ lives and spending habits.

Gen Z is known for its creativity; however, many people say it is easy for them to give up and get hurt. And yet, with the advancement of technology and more access to information, many people put so much expectation on Gen Z, making them have an enormous weight, afraid to fail and feel more anxious.

Additionally, with social media promoting a hustle culture and living a successful life at such a young age, many people from this generation want to succeed quickly, and if they don’t, it will make them feel stressed.

Understanding Healing in Gen Z

Healing is a stress-coping mechanism for many Gen Zers. It is an emotion-focused coping strategy for stress or problems that involve emotion. Healing involves shifting focus to the problem and reducing stress by calming oneself or taking a brief escape.

For many young Indonesians, healing represents a holistic approach to self-care, encompassing mental health practices, wellness activities, and emotional growth. Activities such as yoga, meditation, and self-care routines have gained popularity as Gen Z becomes more aware of the importance of mental health (Snapcart, 2023).

Nevertheless, the influence of social media cannot be understated. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok showcase wellness influencers, encouraging followers to invest in their well-being. The social media platforms also serve as inspiration for travel and exploration, where influencers share their adventures, encouraging followers to seek similar experiences.

Spending Trends Related to Healing

As a result of this healing focus, spending habits among Gen Z are evolving. Many are willing to allocate their budgets toward wellness products and experiences, viewing them as essential rather than luxury items. This includes spending on skincare, fitness memberships, and mental health resources (Pew Research Center, 2022). Brands that promote self-care and mental wellness are likely to resonate well with this audience, creating opportunities for engagement and loyalty.

They are also willing to invest in travel and experiences, viewing them as essential to their well-being. This includes spending on accommodations, local cuisines, and recreational activities that promote relaxation and happiness (Pew Research Center, 2022). Brands that cater to these experiences—such as travel agencies, hotels, and wellness retreats—are likely to resonate well with this audience.

Social media also plays a significant role in amplifying this trend. Platforms like Instagram and This exposure often leads to increased spending as young people seek to capture their own memorable moments (Nielsen, 2023).

This healing phenomenon among Gen Z in Indonesia is significantly influencing their spending habits.

As young consumers prioritize investing in self-care and experiences that enhance their mental well-being, brands that align with these values can effectively engage this demographic, fostering loyalty and community.
