What A Nice Ride! Part 1

Transportation plays a crucial role in daily life, influencing everything from work commutes to lifestyle choices.

Hence, in February – March 2025, we conducted a survey to discover the most commonly used transportation modes in Indonesia and the factors that drive people’s choices. Check out the result of our study below.

This research found that the majority of Indonesians rely on private vehicles for their daily commute, with 71% choosing this mode. However, the preference for transportation varies across different regions:

  • Java Island: 60% use private vehicles
  • Kalimantan: 80% prefer private vehicles
  • Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, Papua: 87% rely on private transportation
  • Sulawesi: 67% opt for private transportion
  • Sumatra: 69% use private vehicles

Other transportation modes include public transportation (9%), online transportion services (7%), bicycles or walking (6%), and a combination of multiple transportation modes (7%).

There are several factors that influence Indonesians’ choices when it comes to transportation. The most significant reason people choose their mode of travel is speed and efficiency, as 38% of respondents prioritize getting to their destination as quickly as possible. Convenience is another major consideration, with 27% of people preferring a mode of transportion that they are already accustomed to and find practical for their daily lives. Comfort plays an important role as well, with 20% of respondents selecting transportation based on how pleasant and stress-free their journey is. Affordability also weighs heavily on decision-making, with 13% of people opting for budget-friendly transportation options. Additionally, 3% of respondents prioritize environmental concerns, choosing transportation methods that are eco-friendly and sustainable.

Furthermore, in this survey, we also discovered that people from SES Middle prefer to use private vehicles, meanwhile those who come from SES Upper like taking public transportation. You can check the detail of the data below.

Key Factors Influencing Transportation Choices

When choosing a mode of transportation, Indonesians consider various factors. Cost is one of the most important considerations, as 31% of respondents make decisions based on affordability. The length of the commute is another major factor, influencing 29% of individuals who prefer faster and more direct routes to their destinations. Comfort is also a crucial element, with 27% of respondents valuing a pleasant and stress-free journey over other factors. The availability of public transportation plays a role for 10% of Indonesians, who make choices based on accessibility to buses, trains, or ride-hailing services.
