As Ramadan 2025 approaches, Indonesians are preparing for one of the most significant months of the year. Beyond spiritual reflection and communal activities, Ramadan also brings a shift in consumer behaviour, with shopping trends influenced by cultural practices, economic conditions, and personal preferences.
Hence, with 1.808 sample of respondents, our recent study sheds light on how Indonesians plan to shop, spend, and budget during this upcoming festive period.

This survey reveals that 80% of Indonesians are set to celebrate the upcoming Ramadan. While this majority includes Muslims observing the holy month, it’s notable that 7% of non-Muslims in Indonesia also participate in the festivities, which highlights how Ramadan has become a cultural celebration, embraced by many regardless of religious background. Meanwhile, 13% of respondents mentioned they do not celebrate Ramadan.
Indonesians’ Ramadan Budget and Spending During 2025 Economic Climate
For many Indonesians, Ramadan traditionally brings increased household spending. This research found that usually, 75% of respondents expect their expenses to rise during the holy month. Meanwhile, 13% of respondents said that their spending remains consistent with other months, and 11% always expect that during Ramadan, they would spend less than usual.
However, the current economic climate has led many Indonesians to reconsider their Ramadan budgets. According to this survey, 38% of respondents plan to decrease their spending, while 15% intend to increase their budgets for this upcoming holy month.
A significant portion (25%) believes there will be no difference in their spending compared to previous years, while 22% are undecided, possibly waiting to see how economic conditions evolve closer to Ramadan.
Our data shows that most Indonesians are planning their expenses carefully, that for Ramadan in this year:
- 38% will spend less than IDR 1,000,000
- 44% will allocate between IDR 1,000,000 and IDR 3,000,000
- 12% will spend between IDR 3,000,000 and IDR 5,000,000
- 6% plan to spend more than IDR 5,000,000
This data suggests that while many Indonesians are mindful of their budgets, a significant portion is still willing to allocate substantial funds for Ramadan shopping.
Moreover, with the rising cost of living and ongoing economic uncertainties, many Indonesians are also focusing on budget efficiency while shopping for Ramadan. This study discovered that 46% of respondents will prioritize products and brands offering promotions and discounts, while 43% will opt for items priced lower than usual.
Interestingly, only 12% of Indonesians plan to continue buying their favourite brands or products, even if the brands or products’ price remains high or if promotions are not available. This shift indicates a strong preference for affordability and value during Ramadan shopping.
Thus, does this budget efficiency affect Indonesians’ decision to keep on boycotting?
This study found that 49% of Indonesians will maintain their boycott during Ramadan. Nevertheless, some respondents indicated they might reconsider boycotting under specific circumstances. About 18% would end their boycott if the affected brands offered products that meet their needs, while 8.23% would reconsider for attractive promotions and discounts. Additionally, 8.17% would stop boycotting if the brands lowered their prices.
Interestingly, 16% of respondents reported that they have either stopped boycotting altogether or have never participated in boycott actions.
Indonesians’ Timing to Shop for Ramadan 2025 Needs
The timing of Ramadan shopping varies among Indonesians, with many planning their purchases well before the holy month begins. This survey found that:
- 21% start shopping two weeks before Ramadan.
- Another 21% begin 1 to 2 weeks prior.
- 19% wait until 1 week before Ramadan.
- 14% shop in the final 1 to 5 days before Ramadan.
- 26% prefer shopping during Ramadan itself.
This phased approach reflects different planning styles, with some preferring to spread out their purchases while others wait for last-minute deals.
