In Indonesia, condiments hold a special place in enhancing meals. In the first part of this article, we revealed that almost all people in Indonesia love mixing their food with these additional flavours, especially hot sauce and sweet soy sauce [1].

This time, our study shows you how Indonesians choose the condiments they consume, as represented by the infographic below.

According to the data above, when it comes to packaging, a significant portion of respondents (33%) prefer using condiments from small bottles (100–200 ml). Meanwhile others opt for:

  • Sachet packaging: 27%
  • Big bottles (300 ml or more): 25%
  • Small pouches (100–200 ml): 6%
  • Jerry cans/gallons (10 kg or more): 2%

This shows a clear preference for practical and easy-to-use packaging.

Flavour Preferences for Some Condiments

People from different countries usually have different taste in enjoying their food. For instance, in Indonesia, the majority of mayonnaise lovers love mayonnaise with sour, sweetness-dominated flavour, and Indonesians who love spicy love consuming hot sauce with savory and spicy flavour combined.

1.      Mayonnaise Flavour Preferances

For mayonnaise lovers, 23.4% prefer sour, sweetness-dominated flavour, followed by:

  • Sour & savory flavors: 23%
  • Mix of sweet, sour, & savory flavors: 17%
  • Mix of sour, sweet, & spicy flavors: 8%
  • Sour flavors only: 3%

These preferences highlight the diversity of Indonesian palates when it comes to this creamy condiment.

2.      Hot Sauce Flavour Preferences

Hot sauce remains a staple for Indonesians, especially those who enjoy spicy food. The survey reveals that:

  • 51% of spicy-food lovers prefer hot sauce with a savory & spicy flavor combination.
  • Other flavor preferences include:
    • Sweet & spicy: 25%
    • Mix of sweet, sour, & spicy: 14%
    • Extra spicy: 8%
    • Sour & spicy: 3%

This showcases the creativity Indonesians bring to their meals by mixing flavors.

Top Condiment Brands in Indonesia

When choosing their favourite brands, most Indonesians often turn to popular names. Here are the top three brands for various condiments:

  • Tomato Ketchup:
    1. ABC (42%)
    2. Indofood (18%)
    3. Del Monte (14%)
  • Sweet Soy Sauce:
    1. Bango (50%)
    2. ABC (23%)
    3. Sedaap (19%)
  • Mayonnaise:
    1. Maestro (32%)
    2. MamaSuka (24%)
    3. Ajinomoto Mayumi (19%)
  • Mustard:
    1. Heinz (48%)
    2. Maestro (22%)
    3. French’s (17%)
