The Approaching of Long Holidays in Indonesia

Many reports said Indonesian tourism sector is recovering after the Covid-19 pandemic. And it is also been proven by the report from the World Economic Forum (WEF) that stated Indonesia was ranked 22nd out of 119 countries, an increase of 10 places from the 2021 TTDI (Travel Tourism Development Index), which made Indonesia’s ranking in the TTDI has increased and become the second highest in Southeast Asia in 2024 [1].

Coinciding with the long holiday period approaching in December 2024 and March 2025 in Indonesia, Snapcart conducted a study about this phenomenon among Indonesian domestic travelers.

How many Indonesians are planning to go on vacation? And what about their behavior and preferences in traveling?  Check out our study results below.

According to our 1.190 respondents, 68% of them are indeed planning to go on vacation, with more than half of them going out of town; meanwhile, 22% still don’t know yet, which makes it still possible that some of them will travel in the next few months or even weeks.

Moreover, for those who will be on vacation said that many of them have set up the traveling budget around IDR 500.000 – IDR 3.000.000.

Transportation Preferences

Since 51% of Indonesians are planning to go out of town for holiday, we asked them about what types of transportation they will use during their vacation; quite surprisingly, most of them prefer to take cars and motorcycles rather than take public transportation like airplanes, buses, trains, and ships during the trip.

Meanwhile, as the most chosen transportation by the Indonesian passengers, we figured out that Garuda Indonesia is the most favorite airline for Indonesians while they go on vacation, followed by Lion Air, Air Asia, and Citilink.

Furthermore, this research also discovered the top 4 main factors for Indonesians in choosing airlines for a vacation trip, where affordable ticket price is in the number one rank. You can check the details of the data in the infographic above.

Best Place to Refresh Indonesians’ Minds

So far, we have often heard that Bali is the most favorite place for domestic and even international tourists. However, our recent study found out that Yogyakarta has replaced Bali as the most popular holiday destination in 2024 – 2025 for Indonesians.

This data is in sync with people in Indonesia’s tourism places preference, where many of them love to visit beaches (28%) and famous culinary tourism spots (15%) during vacation, and those places can be easily found in several areas in Yogyakarta.

On the other side, we also found out that some countries in Southeast Asia are chosen by most Indonesians to be their destination trip in 2024 – 2025.

In the meantime, our respondents also said that during vacation, many of them (34%) are going to rest in a hotel, and 33% are planning to sleep in a homestay.

Just like choosing an airline, Indonesians also have some key factors to choose a place for resting during the trip. Nevertheless, we figured out that this time, most Indonesians think that the price of the room is less important than the location of the hotel or homestay, as you can see in the infographic at the beginning of this article.

Indonesian Tourists’ Interest in Travel Agency’s Services

Many travel agency companies went bankrupt during the Covid-19 outbreak. But as the rainbow appears after the storm, lots of new travel agency businesses also come to the surface. Some of former agencies even start joining the market again.

As supporting this phenomenon, 66% of our respondents said they have used the travel agency’s services to help them during vacation, as you can see in the infographic above.

However, just like any other services, sometimes there are consumers who wouldn’t back using the service again in the future. And related to this issue, Snapcart figured out the top reasons why Indonesians are not going to go on vacation with the help and guidance from travel agencies anymore.
