A Cup of Tasty Coffee

In this era, coffee has become a lifestyle. In 2023, our research even discovered that 79% of Indonesians are coffee consumers, and the majority of them consume this type of drink at least once every day [1].

Hence, since coffee is now a part of many Indonesians’ daily life, on November 29th – December 2nd 2024, we conducted another study to find out more about their preferences in drinking this beverage. How do they think that a cup of coffee is tasty? What kind of coffee blend and serving do they like? Check out their complete answers below.

With 2.892 respondents from various generations, this survey discovered that the older Indonesians get, the more coffee they consume, as we can see on the table in the infographic above.

Even though there are many coffee lovers in this country, this study found out that milk coffee and coffee that is mixed with sugar are preferred by many Indonesians rather than pure bitter coffee that is not mixed with anything.

In sync with the stereotype among society, this survey also figured out that milk coffee is favoured by many females and Gen Z, meanwhile coffee that is mixed with sugar and pure bitter coffee are favoured by many males and Baby Boomers generation.

From the tables above, we can see that coffee mixed with sugar is popular in Indonesia.

However, since the coffee mixed with palm sugar menu variant is offered by many coffee shops, cafes, and companies, we also asked people who love coffee mixed with sugar whether they love their coffee blend with white or palm sugar, and the graphic below is their answer.

Indonesians’ Favourite Coffee

Living in a tropical country, most Indonesians (56%) prefer to consume iced coffee rather than the hot one.

Furthermore, this survey revealed that cappuccino is still become Indonesians’ favourite type of coffee in 2024, just like in the past year [1].

In this research, we also discovered that more than 70% of Indonesians understand about coffee bean variations. According to the data in the infographic, luwak, arabica, and robusta coffee are the top three favourited by them.

Additionally, since we tried to dig deeper about Indonesians’ taste in drinking coffee, we also asked our respondents about their favourite aftertaste coffee flavour, where we found out that bittersweet and caramelly/chocolatey flavours are the most loved by the Indonesian consumers. You can check their complete answers in the infographic above.

The Best Coffee Serving in Indonesia

This study figured out that in 2024, despite 70% of Indonesians knowing the process of making their favourite coffee, only 23% of them know the process of making all types of their favourite coffee, as shown in the graphic below.

On the other side, according to the infographic above, we can see that although coffee shops, cafes, and ready-to-drink coffee are now everywhere in Indonesia, most Indonesians (44%) still prefer to consume coffee from an instant coffee powder. And 52% of those who like this kind of coffee said they usually blend the coffee by following the instructions from the packaging, meanwhile the rest prefer to blend it their own way.
