Young Indonesians’ Interest in Reading: Part 1

Reading interest in Indonesia has often been reported as low.

However, our recent study in October 2024 discovered that 88% of young Indonesians have a genuine interest in reading, and even 42% of young people in Indonesia enjoy reading every day. This finding challenges the assumption that reading isn’t popular among the younger generation in Indonesia.

Reading preferences among young Indonesians

This research also found out each young generation’s preferences in reading, such as:

  • 60% of Gen Z readers prefer reading online contents like e-book, online shorts stories and/or comics, etc. Meanwhile, only 45% of Millennials aged 28-38 share this preference.
  • 34% of Gen Z and 49% of Millennials enjoy offline reading materials.
  • Audiobooks are less popular, with 6% of Gen Z and 5% of Millennials using this format.

Moreover, this study also highlighted the top 3 most favorite platforms for young Indonesians who love reading online, such as:

  1. Fizzo – 40%
  2. Wattpad – 18%
  3. Webtoon – 18%

These platforms cater to various reading interests, from serialized fiction to graphic novels, illustrating the diverse tastes among Indonesian youth.

All in all, with 88% of young Indonesians enjoying reading, this generation shows a strong connection to both digital and traditional formats. Whether they read online or offline, young Indonesians are clearly more engaged in reading than previously believed.
