The following are 3 key findings that we have compiled through research of our internal data and other external sources. One of the key sources we think is very relevant is a research by McKinsey & Co. on a recent survey of coronavirus crisis sentiment.
Social distancing, lockdown, forced shoppers to stay at home. Nearby minimarkets are the main source to replenish products while grocery deliveries are gaining traction. Screen time increased, trips are reduced significantly, while basket size swells.
Contents of shopping basket changed. People tend to stock up more essential categories like food, water, toiletries and cleaning products. Boredom increases spending in home entertainment, but at the same time concerns on income drives frugality.
Panic buying and production issues may have caused availability problems for some popular brands. People never switch categories, but will most definitely switch brands. Brands who are able to protect and/or grab shares will win in the long term.
