Brand New or Used Cars? Part 2

According to numerous news sources, Indonesians these days prefer to purchase old cars over brand-new ones. However, as stated in the previous article, our research revealed that Indonesians continue to favor brand-new cars over used ones in 2024 [1].

Furthermore, we also discovered people in Indonesia’s preferences in purchasing new cars, as shown in the infographic below.

Why Do Indonesians Favor New Cars?

The reasons behind the overwhelming preference for new cars reveal some interesting insights, such as:

  1. Peace of Mind: The primary reason, cited by 67% of respondents, is the assurance that the car is brand new, with no history of engine damage or prior use.
  2. Warranty and Guarantee: About 14% value the certainty of receiving a warranty or guarantee that comes with purchasing a new car.
  3. Keeping Up with Trends: 10% are keen on staying up to date with the latest car trends and owning models that are popular in the market.
  4. First Ownership: Approximately 3.4% want the unique experience of being the first person to drive the car.
  5. Latest Launches: For 3.1%, the appeal lies in buying cars that have just been launched, which are not yet available in the used car market.
  6. Other Reasons: A smaller group (2.8%) mentioned other factors influencing their choice.

Why Do Some Indonesians Choose Used Cars?

While the majority favor new cars, used cars still attract a niche audience due to several compelling reasons:

  1. Affordable Prices: The most significant factor, mentioned by 64% of respondents, is the affordability of used cars compared to new ones.
  2. Comparable Quality: Around 18% believe that the quality and specifications of some used cars are just as good as new ones.
  3. Easier Resale: For 6%, used cars are easier to sell to third parties than new vehicles.
  4. Discontinued Models: About 4% prefer used cars because the specific model they want is no longer produced or sold as a new version.

Shopping Preferences for Cars

Most Indonesians (79%) prefer the traditional experience of visiting car showrooms to purchase their vehicles, which allows them to inspect the car physically, consult with sales representatives, and finalize their choice confidently. On the other hand, a smaller segment explores online platforms, car dealers, and other avenues for their purchases.

In short, the Indonesian automotive market leans heavily toward new cars, driven by factors such as reliability, warranties, and the allure of owning the latest models. However, the affordability and availability of specific models ensure that used cars continue to attract a segment of buyers.
